WAHS Students Participate in Job Shadowing Program
Two groups of High School students recently participated in a job shadowing opportunity as part of the school district's career initiative. On January 13, four juniors traveled to Wayne Memorial Hospital in order to learn about the hospital's daily operations and procedures. Mrs. Vicki Swift orientated the students to the hospital and its policies. The students each visited a specific department, including Cardiology, the Phlebotomy Laboratory, Physical Therapy, and the Pharmacy. During their two hour observations, Brie Lis, Taylor Tedesco, John Jones, and Christopher Santos toured the facilities, learned about the educational and training requirements, and discussed career responsibilities with hospital professionals. On January 16, three students traveled to Blooming Grove State Police Barracks for a tour of the barracks and an explanation of each section's function. Trooper Carl Ives conducted the tour, explaining the difference among personnel ranking and their basic responsibilities. Brienne Bernstel, Victor Steffen, and Tyler Pino observed the holding rooms, the photograph and fingerprinting operations, and the communications center. Trooper Ives discussed his personal experiences, the academic and physical requirements, and the application process, as well as the challenging and emotionally rewarding career aspects. Mrs. Colleen Edwards, WAHS Career Coordinator, would like to express her appreciation to both Wayne Memorial Hospital and the Pennsylvania State Police for providing valuable, practical experiences for our students, allowing them to gain significant insight into medical and law enforcement careers.

Middle School Students Experience Thermal Imaging
The sixth grade students of Mrs. Wentz’ class recently had a guest speaker to discuss infrared technology, more specifically thermal imaging. Mr. Keith Gunuskey, WAMS Principal, and Captain of the Texas #4 Fire Co. of the Honesdale Fire Department, showed the class one type of thermal imaging camera (TIC) widely% used in the fire service. He spoke with the students about how the TIC works, the science behind the development of the camera and other professions and careers that use infrared technology. Under his direction, the students were able to use the camera to find their classmates in a dark environment, in order to simulate a low-visibility or smoke-filled room. In addition, the students worked in groups to predict where the “hot spots” would be on a running vehicle and what color those areas would be (color is based upon heat detection). “Any time an educator can link what students are learning in the classroom with real-world and meaningful activities, it is then that you will have true learning and understanding”. |
